How to Check if an Instagram Username Is Available

Type the username you want into the box above (with or without the @).
Click Check Now. The checker looks up whether an Instagram account uses the name.
Available means no account has it right now; Taken comes with a link to the account that has it.

Instagram Username Rules

Up to 30 characters.
Only letters, numbers, underscores (_) and dots (.). No spaces, dashes or emoji.
No dot at the start or the end, and no two dots in a row.
Capital letters do not make a name different: Coffee.Lab and coffee.lab are the same username.

The checker applies these rules first, so a name Instagram would refuse is marked Not allowed straight away.

When an Available Name Still Will Not Work

Instagram does not release a username the moment an account is gone. Names of deleted, deactivated or banned accounts can stay locked for some time, and Instagram reserves some names for itself. If the checker says a name is available but Instagram will not let you take it, it is usually one of these. Try a small change, such as adding an underscore, a dot or a short word.

How to Change Your Instagram Username

In the Instagram app, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Username, type the new name and save. After a change Instagram usually holds your old name for 14 days, so you can switch back if you change your mind.
